July contest preview

I’m anticipating 2 things in July: the release of my Eiffel Tower Shawl (see below) on or before July 1st and the start of the Tour de France (July 3rd). I thought I’d combine the two for a fun and crazy month of knitting and prizes. I’ll be running a knitalong (KAL) contest for the Eiffel Tower Shawl pattern to coincide with the riding of the Tour de France. To be notified when the shawl pattern goes live and the contest begins, please join my mailing list.

Eiffel Tower Shawl

Tour de France/Eiffel Tower Shawl KAL CONTEST!

There will be categories similar to those in the Tour de France. One person will win for each category, and will choose any ONE of the yarns in their category. The categories right now are:

Maillot Jaune – Yellow Jersey

Winner of the overall Tour de France. You have to complete the Eiffel Tower Shawl within the Tour de France (July 3 – 25) to be eligible. This will go to, um, well, my favourite? A group favourite? If you’ve got any suggestions on the best way to pick an overall winner among those who complete the Tour de France Eiffel Tower KAL, drop them my way. Since I’ve just finished my large lace version of the shawl with one skein of Sundara Silk Lace in Amber Seas (see picture above), the other one is up for grabs for the overall winner!

Maillot Vert – Green Jersey – for the sprinters
For the speedy knitters, I’ll do a random draw from among the first 5 finishers – a photo finish, as it were.

Maillot Blanc – White Jersey – best “young” knitters
For those new-to-lace, or new-to-knitting. You can choose to identify yourself as a contestant for the white jersey, and if you complete the shawl during the Tour, you’ll be eligible for the draw for this prize.

Lanterne Rouge – “last” place
Not everyone who starts the Tour de France finishes, so anyone who starts the Tour but doesn’t finish within the deadline will be eligible for the Lanterne Rouge prize.

The Red Devil – spectators
Not everyone has the time and space to compete in the Tour, but there will be a prize category for those who wish to follow along and cheer on the competitors. The inspiration that sprang to mind was Didi Senft, a notorious spectator, bike-builder, and cycling fanatic.

So now what?

Please email me (nservant at gmail dot com) if you’ve got any suggestions for the contest or category expansions that I haven’t thought of. For instance I couldn’t figure out what the polka dot jersey (best climber) would mean in terms of knitting a shawl!

More details will come soon and if you want to find out when the pattern is available and the contest begins, please join my mailing list! No spam, I promise. Only very infrequent updates on pattern news from me. And the good news about joining the list? That’s one of the ways to become eligible for the spectator prize!

Oooh, what a lovely idea! I’m an annual Tour de France widow – hubby follows every stage like there’s no tomorrow. So it would be great to join the fun… :)

I’ll check back on Ravelry on July 1st for the pattern. Meanwhile I’ll look around for suitable yarn…

Sounds wonderful! I find the Tour de France is great to knit to – relaxing, great views, but you don’t have to watch every second because Phil & Paul will alert you if something’s going on.

  2. Tia says:

I am signed up for the Tour de Fleece on Ravelry.. but I’m very tempted to do both!!

It’s a GORGEOUS pattern and I really want to knit it.

I love this so much! I’m totally going to knit it & wear it in Paris when I go in November. I think that makes it a “must knit”, don’t you? I even have the perfect yarn – Handmaiden Sea Silk in Stardust which is a gorgeous gorgeous grey/silver. Sigh.

  6. Ladylungdoc says:

Perhaps the Polka Dot Jersey category could be for people who tweak the pattern to personalize it, or perhaps use the pattern as the inspiration for something other than a shawl?

  7. zenasmillet says:

Can’t believe there are others who dig both knitting & Tour de France!
    Beautiful shawl!
    Happy knitting everyone!
