Some of my favourite things

In packing, I’m noticing my possessions more than I usually do. I’m trying to figure out what I don’t like and what I don’t need. There’s a pile accumulating on the dining room table.

I’m also noticing the objects that I love. I’ve noticed that we own a group of ceramic objects from various trips we’ve taken and I still love them all.

While on a business trip in Ireland, I saw this mirror in an home interiors shop and had to buy it. I’ve loved Celtic knotwork for a long time and this mirror had to be mine.

When my husband and I were on a trip to New Zealand, we came across this pottery bowl by Peter Shearer in a shop, possibly in Auckland. As anyone who’s seen my stash already knows, green is a favourite of mine. We were both drawn to this work. Sadly, I don’t believe Peter has a web site of his own, but you can see more of his work here, here, and here.

And then there’s my favourite of all: a bowl I bought in Valbonne, France. My husband was on a business trip and for once the stars aligned and I was able to go along. This was back when they were paying for first class seats on long flights, and we were able to get 2 seats for less than the cost of that, so I essentially flew for free. Oh, the food we had in that week! And the drinks! Wonderful. I didn’t truly appreciate goat cheese before that trip.

At some point in that trip, another guy’s wife & I had time to shop while the husbands were working. There was a store in the central square in Valbonne with all this pottery. I was stunned at the beauty of the forms and the colours. This bowl was what I could afford at the time. I carried this on the plane all the way back as part of my hand luggage. Right at this moment it’s serving as a fruit bowl.

I can’t remember where I got it and I have no idea who made it. I even used Google’s street view to check out the square to see if I could spot the store. If anyone knows anything about the creator of this bowl, let me know!
